Statement on behalf of the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago Service Corporation (FSCSC)
The negative characterization of The Franciscan Sisters and The Clare at Water Tower is extremely misleading.

The Clare is a Life Care community and is designed to provide security, peace of mind, and predictability in meeting future healthcare needs.  The entrance fee is 90- to 95-percent refundable to the individual or the estate.  Life Care guarantees lifelong healthcare at predictable costs, even as an individual’s healthcare needs change.  Entrance fees for Life Care communities such as The Clare are determined in accordance with their location and comparability to the market.

As a not-for-profit organization, The Franciscan Sisters of Chicago Service Corporation (FSCSC) has a long history of providing housing, community service and charity to people of all backgrounds – especially the poor. For more than 100 years, we have remained true to our vision of enabling those we serve to experience the fullness of their lives, and our mission to honor the dignity of life by serving as a compassionate community.

To that end, FSCSC:
· Built the very first Catholic nursing home in Chicago, St. Joseph’s Home, 110 years ago.
· Owns and operates affordable senior housing in the Chicago area; is currently building affordable senior housing Louisville, Kentucky; and has plans to develop additional affordable senior housing in the Midwest and Texas. Monthly rents at these communities are as low as $360.
· Through its “Gift of Care” program, provides additional, confidential financial support to residents seeking assistance with monthly fees.
· Over the past five years alone, has provided housing and healthcare to more than 2,700 needy individuals at a combined cost of more than $34.3 million.
· During that same period, has contributed an additional $1.6 million in charity care and in-kind donations to needy individuals.
· Has contributed more than $1,956,000 to St. Jude House, an emergency shelter and care center for victims of domestic violence, located in Crown Point, Indiana.
· Has established and contributed more than  $1,345,000 to the Madonna Foundation, providing financial aid for underprivileged young women to attend Chicago Catholic high schools.
· Donates additional time, money and personal resources, and touches the lives of thousands of individuals each year through the dozens of other programs and initiatives that comprise the many different ministries of the organization.

Resources from all our projects, including The Clare at Water Tower, are used to expand our ministries and to continue to serve those in physical, financial, emotional and spiritual need. We are proud of our 110-year history caring for people in all walks of life.
